The US "Aerospace Weekly" website reported on May 11, 2015 that compared with free-flying small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), tethered UAVs have the advantages of longer fixed-point space time and can avoid airspace use problems. This has also revived the application of this aircraft in fields from border surveillance to news interviews.

The U.S. subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Stark Aerospace, said it will deliver the first Hover Light (HoverLite) tethered unmanned aircraft to a U.S. government customer in June.

Stark Aerospace is an American subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

This platform uses ducted fans and also has four propellers for stability and control, and can hover at 165 feet (about 50.29 meters).

Stark said the system is deployed in a basic unit with a diesel generator, which can be left empty for more than 20 hours using the generator's own fuel, and longer if the generator can be refueled.

The unit can be transported by truck and can travel at a speed of up to 15 km/h when deployed with "hover lights. By using differential GPS between the hovering platform and the base unit, the system can maintain an accuracy of plus or minus 15 inches above the vehicle when hovering. The drone can operate normally at a wind speed of 46.67 km/h (29 mph) and automatically land back to the base unit when the tether angle exceeds 15 degrees.

The "hovering light" can carry a photoelectric sensor mounted on the gimbal to provide a 360-degree view. For the $50 to $600000 system, potential missions include base security, border surveillance, news interviews, disaster clean-up, and line-of-sight extension for Navy warships.
