There are no strict boundaries between wires and cables. Generally, products with a small number of cores, a small product diameter, and a simple structure are called wires, those without insulation are called bare wires, and others are called cables; conductors with larger cross-sectional areas (greater than 6 mm²) are called large wires, and smaller ones (Less than or equal to 6 mm²) is called small wires, and insulated wires are also called cloth wires.

Wire and cable is mainly composed of the following 4 parts

1. Conductive core

Made of high conductivity material (copper or aluminum). Each core may be made of a single conductor or multiple conductors stranded according to the requirements of the cable softness under the laying and use conditions.

2. Insulation

The insulating material used as the cable should have a high insulation resistance. Insulation materials commonly used in cables are oil-impregnated paper, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, cross-linked polyethylene, rubber, etc.

3. Sealing sheath

Protect insulated cores from mechanical, moisture, moisture, chemicals, light, etc. For damp insulation, generally use lead or aluminum extrusion sealing sheath.

4. Protective cover

To protect the sealing sheath from mechanical damage. Generally, galvanized steel tape, steel wire or copper tape, copper wire, etc. are used as armor to wrap around the sheath (called armored cable), and the armor layer plays the role of electric field shielding and preventing external electromagnetic wave interference at the same time. In order to avoid the corrosion of steel belts and steel wires by the surrounding medium, they are generally coated with asphalt or wrapped around the impregnated jute layer or extruded polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride sleeves.
